Menthos Crystals

Add to hot water to make steam inhalations for treating catarrh and dry out painful coughs.

Vapour Rub

Again, for steam inhalations. Also useful for children with stuffy noses or dry coughs. Rub on the chest and nose.

Antiseptic Solution

One teaspoon diluted in warm water for cleaning cuts and grazes.

Antiseptic Creams e.g. Savlon.

For treating septic spots, sores in the nose and grazes.to reduce the risk of infection

Calamine Lotion

For dabbing (not rubbing) on insect bites and stings and sunburn.

Sticky Plasters

Essential for minor cuts and grazes

3" Wide Crepe Bandage

To keep dressing in place. To support sprained or bruised joints. Cotton Wool: For cleaning cuts and grazes.

Thermometer

For fevers.

Tweezers

For removing splinters

Paracetamol tablets in adults

Use for headaches and other aches and pains and for reducing fevers and flu symptoms

Paracetamol syrup (eg: Calpol)

use instead of tablets in children, adjust the dose according to age to reduce fevers use as for tablets above.

Ibuprofen tablets (eg: Nurofen)

can be used as for paracetamol but do not use if history of stomach ulcer or asthma

Ibuprofen syrup (eg: Junifen):

use as for paracetamol in children. It is sometimes better at relieving high temperatures. Warning as for tablets.

Loperamide (Imodium)

can be used to reduce the pain and diarrhoea in gastroenteritis

Antihistamine tablets (eg Piriton)

For allergies such as hay fever and very itchy bites but they often cause drowsiness

Ice Packs

these can often be kept in the freezer useful for relieving pain and discomfort of strains and sprains. Remember RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression (gentle) and Elevation).

Remember always to store medicines out of the reach of children. Please read the bottle carefully before taking any medication and if in any doubt consult your Pharmacist or GP. Replace any out of date medicines and return them to your local chemist for disposal.
