Short Story About Grove House Surgery

Situated deep in the heart of the finest part of old Batley, and as such part of the local conservation area, our building has been a surgery for over 100 years, expanding and adapting to changes in medicine and the increasing population of the town.

Diabetes and Ramadan

Ramadan in 2026 will run from on or around Tuesday 17 February for 29 or 30 days, ending with Eid al-Fitr, a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide.

For many of our patients, Ramadan is a deeply meaningful time of reflection, community, and spiritual practice. We recognise that some people living with diabetes choose to fast during this month, and our role as your primary care team is to help you do so as safely as possible. Fasting can affect blood glucose levels, hydration, and the way diabetes medications work, so planning ahead is essential.

Our clinicians offer personalised pre‑Ramadan assessments to discuss your individual health risks, review your medication regimen, and explore practical strategies to prevent complications such as low blood sugar, dehydration, or loss of glucose control. We also provide guidance on healthy eating during non‑fasting hours, blood glucose monitoring, and recognising warning signs that mean you should break your fast.

By working together early, we aim to support your wellbeing while respecting your religious commitments. If you are considering fasting this Ramadan, we encourage you to contact the practice for tailored advice and support.

You and Your General Practice

What you can expect from your GP practice.

Your GP practice is here to support your health and wellbeing. The guide explains the standards you should receive when accessing services, such as being treated with dignity and respect, being offered safe and effective care, and being listened to.

What your GP practice expects from you.

To help us provide care efficiently and fairly for everyone, the guide outlines what practices ask of patients. This includes things like attending appointments on time, treating staff respectfully, and cancelling appointments you no longer need so they can be offered to someone else.

Working together

The relationship between you and your GP practice works best when there is clear communication and mutual understanding. The guide highlights how both patients and practices can work in partnership to improve health outcomes and make sure care is accessible for all.

Feedback and concerns

The NHS encourages feedback so that services can continue to improve. The guide explains how you can share your experiences, give suggestions, or raise concerns if you feel something has not gone as it should.

Why this matters

“You and Your General Practice” has been designed to:

  • Give patients clear information about how GP practices work.
  • Make it easier to know what to expect when you use GP services.
  • Help both patients and staff have a positive, respectful experience.
  • Support good communication and reduce misunderstandings.

If you wish to provide feedback or express a concern, your GP practice is the first point of contact. However, if you are not comfortable sharing your feedback directly with your practice, you can get in touch with NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB). The ICB is responsible for overseeing GP services in West Yorkshire, and you can find a feedback form by clicking this link:
